Phonics
Here at Wygate, reading is the foundation of everything we do. This begins in the early years and continues throughout their school journey. At Wygate, we follow the Phonics Shed scheme to help teach the earliest reading. This happens daily in EYFS and KS1 and quickly progresses to enable children to become successful and fluent readers and writers.
Phonics Shed provides a systematic teaching of high-quality phonics which provides children with a solid foundation in decoding and segmenting to enable their reading journey to begin in the most successful way. This programme focuses on methods of learning letter sounds and blending them together to read and write words through a narrative approach.
Throughout phonics, the children meet a range of exciting and engaging characters through songs and stories to help remember and consolidate their learning throughout. Phonics learning is consolidated throughout the day through a range of engaging activities and provision and any children who need further support, receive quick and precise interventions to help them keep up.
Within their phonics learning, children will also receive two Big Cat Collins phonics books each week to practise the skills that they have been learning within the classroom, which align with the Phonics Shed progression.
Our aim within all of our phonics teaching is for children to become fluent and confident readers and writers, who can apply their knowledge and experience to a range of texts throughout KS1 and KS2. Children will leave KS1 being able to decode all words and will be confident in tackling unfamiliar words by applying their knowledge. Children at Wygate Park show high engagement within phonics and use our wonderful learning environments to support their independence.
